Charlottesville, VA City Market

Just had a lovely weekend in Charlottesville, VA, USA. Our main purpose was to visit friends in nearby Crozet, but we had a bit of time to wander around downtown Charlottesville. We checked out City Market, the weekly Saturday Farmer’s Market. Dozens of booths sold produce, flowers, soaps, food, jewelry and more. I particularly enjoyed all the stalks of sunflowers with their cheery faces pointing up at the sun.

Did you know the scientific name for sunflower is Helianthus? Helia for sun and anthus for flower?  They are native to the Americas and some varieties grow to be 16 feet tall! In 2012, sunflower seeds were taken up into space!
